Can you give me some advice about self-publishing a book? Wow, there is no short answer to that question, in fact entire books are devoted to answering your question. Although potentially daunting, independently publishing a book is not "rocket science". Thus, with clear vision of your goals, understanding the process, and perseverance, it can be successfully done, even by someone with no prior knowledge of the publishing world. It will be a lot of work, but rewarding. I have pulled together a list of some of the resources I have found helpful since I was first asked to write a book in 1997. I would start by going to your public library to check out Judith Appelbaum's book How to Get Happily Published in order to read a good overview of the entire industry (both publishing independently and by a large publishing house). If you decide to go ahead with writing and publishing yourself, learn many of the details from books by Tom Poynter and John Kremer. There is much helpful and free information available on their web sites (see below). In addition, both of these authors regularly hold workshops around the country on how to publish and market your book. Ask you local library if there is a group of local authors who could also give you advice and encouragement. That should get you started. I wish you much success and enjoyment of the process.
