A Dietitian's Cancer Story
The idea for this book was born after one of those "defining moments" in my life. On April 8, 1997, The Detroit Free Press published an article entitled "Nutrition vs. Cancer" in which my recovery from a childhood cancer, neuroblastoma, and two separate breast cancers, at ages 34 and 45, was highlighted. In addition to providing an over view of current knowledge, guidelines, and research evaluating the nutrition and cancer connections, the article discussed the changes that I, as a Registered Dietitian, have made in my diet and lifestyle to minimize the risk of cancer recurrence after my second breast cancer. I did have a mastectomy and chemotherapy with each breast cancer. However, I have chosen to recover from my second breast cancer very differently from my first one by making significant changes in both my diet and lifestyle, many of which fall under the umbrella term of "alternative/complementary medicine".
